Casual Friday Rules

I often get asked questions about Casual Friday. Recently a gentleman shared his misgivings about this work-week event with me. Always comfortable in his suits on Monday through Thursday, when Casual Friday rolls along he confessed he turns to his wife to figure out what to wear.

My view is this is a celebration, not a task. However, stepping outside of a suit can be daunting for some men. Other men may bend the rules too far. Casual Friday does mean a more relaxed dress code, but does not mean unprofessional attire. Here are some general guidelines for Casual Friday.

How to Rock Casual Friday

  • Clothing must be clean, neat and ironed
  • Jeans (if permitted) should be free from any rips and should have refined stitching
  • Athletic shoes should be avoided
  • Clothing should be free of any slogans or ads(unless they pertain to the company you work for)

Each workplace will have its own culture. In the absence of an outlined policy for Casual Friday, a collared shirt, blazer and khaki pants are a safe bet.
