The Best Neckties to Buy

"A well-tied tie is the first serious step in life."
-Oscar Wilde

Whether you are selecting a tie for yourself or as a gift for someone else, it is important to know how to select a quality necktie.  A necktie is a beautiful way to add personality and mood to a man's set. It can be the go to gift since many believe it is a one-size fits all piece of clothing. However, size does matter and quality varies greatly with neckties so it is important to know what to look for when purchasing one.

What to Look For When Purchasing a Luxury Tie

The finest handcrafted ties are seven-fold ties. Cut from a single piece of cloth, this tie is folded into itself seven times. Other indicators of quality include a heavier silk, distinct prints, brilliant colors, a balanced weight and country of origin. Ties handcrafted in countries such as Italy, France and England tend to be higher quality.

Sizing

Traditional Width- 3.5 inches
Slim Width-3 inches
Skinny Tie-2.5 inches and below

Consider the size of the gentleman and the event the tie will be worn to when selecting a tie.

Anatomy of a Tie

Inner Lining

This gives the tie its shape and weight so it will hang properly.  Highest quality linings are 100% wool.

Keeper Loop

This feature allows the tail of the necktie to lie flat.  The tie should be tucked into the back of the tie loop to ensure it lies flat.

Dimple

The dimple is a reflection of your personal style. It is created when you tie your tie.

Length

A tie should reach the waistband of your trousers after it’s tied.  The tip of the tie should hit the belt buckle. This rule can be broken in my opinion for the sake of "sprezaturra".
